Nelson Brown Offers Careers Advice.

Passion, technique and creative vision are the skills on which Nelson Brown has built a stellar career as one of the country’s top hair professionals. Nelson spent many years laying the foundation of his solid reputation with industry leaders Vidal Sassoon before returning to his native Scotland. Over the last 8 years he has given focus to his growing salon business, with salons in Dumfries and Lockerbie, his session career and his love of teaching others.

Nelson’s impressive list of accolades includes three nominations for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, a nomination for Men’s British Hairdresser of the Year plus regular work with editorial stylist Raphael Salley on seasonal collections for designers such as Paul Smith, Gareth Pugh, Julian McDonald and Burberry.  This coming season he is also being called to New York for Fashion Week. Session styling for photo shoots and magazines have become a particular strength.  ‘A’ listers and top models are no stranger to Nelson’s charm or distinctive work and they keep coming back for more.

Nelson says; You have to have a real passion for what you do, as session styling is nothing like salon work.  Also you need to try and meet new contacts and eventually get to meet a key stylist who then will take you on their team, this way you get to start doing the shows at London Fashion Week and then the world!

Also the relationship you have with the key stylist is very important to build on. For example, when I assist key stylists, I'm back to being a junior and make sure they don't need ANYTHING.

Be prepared to work very hard and long hours, as well as travelling lots through the night. It sounds glamorous I know but that's what it takes.

Stick with it, don’t be disheartened when things don't happen, have a back up plan and live for the job.
