Malcolm Edwards gives his Top Tips for becoming a Session Stylist

Malcolm Edwards, who created the crimped and tousled looks seen on the catwalks during London Fashion Week SS 2008, for the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Amanda Wakeley and Aquascutum, shares his Top Tips for becoming a session stylist.

1. Research the Industry

Who do you admire and respect; try to assist them!

Be patient, persistent, and professional.

Be open to learning, team work and communication.

2. Diversify your skills

Make sure your salon accommodates the erratic schedule.

Try to work in a flexible and supportive salon until your session work grows, it can be a long transition.

Always share your new knowledge with the salon so that way everyone is a winner.

3. Be Passionate

Make yourself available.

Be aware not all work is paid.

Join the show circuit for experience.

Time assisting is invaluable, as it gives insight into the mechanics of the industry. In the session world you are part of a team and there are many components to every job, which can be daunting. Even if you’re an established hairdresser be prepared to learn new ways of doing things.....above all be open.

Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut and you'll be surprised at how quick you learn.......sounds harsh but a great bit of advice, you'll be surprised at how it works!
