When the queen of fashion returned to (rightfully!!) reclaim her crown on British soil, for the first time in nine years, the hair was designed to be as eclectic as her collection.
From wild crimped locks, through to a a mad-Marilyn and then Lily Donaldson’s classic gorgeous tumbling waves Malcolm Edwards and his team demonstrated that hair is more than just an accessory – it’s an essential part of the entire look.
The team used BaByliss PRO crimpers (current title holder of HAIR magazine’s Innovation of the Year Award) to create gorgeous big hair with lots of texture. To recreate, take hair in sections of about 7cm width and crimp top to bottom. Spray each section with hairspray before crimping. Once all hair is crimped brush through to create a wild frizz effect!
Malcolm also used the BaByliss PRO Dial-a-heat Ceramic tongs (38mm) to create large barrel curls. Malcolm’s top tip is to pin each curl up as it’s created and then unpin all together at the end – this ensures the first curls don’t drop before the last ones are created. Make sure you spray hair with a heat protector and hairspray before curling to ensure long lasting, glossy curls.
Hair was given a natural tousled, soft wave with the BaByliss PRO dial-a-heat 38mm tong. Some of the models were applied extensions along the fringe area, to add heaviness to their fringes as they were swept to the side over one eye. The fringes were dried using a round brush in the opposite direction off where it would fall, to ensure fringes will stay neatly swept and laying casually over the eye.
The hair was treated accordingly to achieve a natural tousled soft wave effect by using the BaByliss PRO dial-a-heat tongs or BaByliss PRO irons, before backcombing the area just below the crown (about 2 inches from), then the hair is gently pulled back covering the ears into a low pony tail. (If the front perimeter area was layered, the hair was tonged to give a bend, so it doesn't sit poker straight on the face once the style is achieved! Once the pony is in, the free hair divided in two sections, and pulled around the bobble. The ends were secured with a small elastic Rusk polyband under the hair and pinned in. If the hair is not high enough at the area below the crown with your fingers gently pull on the backcombed area for more height.
This style was achieved by putting mini pony tails (using Rusk elastic polybands) starting at the high recession and following an "s" shape down to the nape - roughly between 7-9 ponies depending on the head size and shape.
Starting from the last pony at the nape, split the pony in two and begin to knot-braid the pony enough to join into the following pony and the process is repeated until all the free hair is joined by the knot-braid. The excess length at the front is then tucked under and pinned to lightly sit just in front of the hairline. The braid is then pinned down securely to cover the elastic poly bands.
